バレンタインの由来は？
- The origin of Valentine’s Day dates back to Rome in the 3rd century.
バレンタインの起源は、３世紀のローマ時代にさかのぼります。 - The soldiers had to leave their loved ones in their hometowns.
兵士は愛する人を故郷に残さないといけませんでした。 - The Roman emperor Claudius II forbidden soldiers from marrying because it makes their morale down.
ローマ帝国の王 クラウディウス２世は 、それが兵の士気を下げるという理由で、結婚を禁じました。 - Meanwhile, it was Valentinus, a Christian priest, who went against the policy and got many soldiers married off behind the emperor’s back.
そんな中で、その政策に反対し、隠れて多くの兵士を結婚させていたのが、キリスト教の司祭、バレンティヌスでした。 - His rumors soon came to the emperor’s ears, and the emperor ordered Valentinus to never do that again and to convert to Roman religion.
やがて彼の噂は皇帝の耳に入り、皇帝はヴァレンティヌスにローマの宗教に改宗し、二度とそのようなことを行わないよう、命令しました。 - However, Valentinus did not obey his orders, so he was executed on February 14, around 270 AD. (イギリス英語：the 14th of February)
しかし、ヴァレンティヌスはその命令に従わず、270年頃の2月14日に処刑されたのです。 - Later generations praised Valentino’s courageous actions and began to worship him as the guardian sacred god of love, “St. Valentine.”
その後、ヴァレンティヌスの勇気ある行動はたたえられ、愛の守護聖神「聖ヴァレンタイン」としてまつられました。 - Then, February 14th, when Priest Valentinus was executed, was called “Saint Valentine’s Day” and he began to pray.

バレンタインは日本でどうやって広まった？

チョコレートを贈るという習慣の始まりについては、諸説あります - One of the confectionery companies published an advertising copy in a newspaper saying “Let’s give chocolate to your Valentine” in 1935.
とある製菓会社が1935年に新聞に「あなたのバレンタインにチョコレートを贈りましょう」という広告が出されました。 - It is also known that a chocolate company started a campaign in 1958.
また、1958年からあるチョコレートの製造会社がキャンペーンを始めたことも知られています。
